The world can feel like a scary place, especially for kids. Between navigating the battlefield of pre-teen social life while also trying to figure out who they are, it’s easy for them to feel lost. Add to that the brain’s tendency to convince us that our struggles are unique, that we’re somehow the only ones who feel this way, and it’s no wonder so many young people feel overwhelmed.
While I can’t take away the challenges that cause those big emotions, what I can do is give kids a road map to navigate them through the IOP.
In this space, the first thing kids learn is that they are not alone. That simple realization can be life-changing. Nothing normalizes emotions more powerfully than hearing your own thoughts spoken by someone else who truly gets it. That is why the tween group is so impactful. Kids get to see that others are struggling with the same things, that they can face them together, and that there is real hope, even when life feels hopeless.
Throughout the program, they build a set of coping tools they can actually use in daily life. By the time they finish, they leave with greater resilience, strength, and even a bit of joy.
In addition to facilitating groups, I also serve as the clinical supervisor for the minors program. I use my years of experience to guide our team through everything from managing challenging behaviors to navigating school systems and helping parents strengthen communication with their children.
I love this dual role. It allows me to be a therapist, an advisor, and a cheerleader for both our team and the families we serve. Watching kids and clinicians grow side by side is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.
